Micro Habits for Healthy Living

“Habit and routine have an unbelievable power to waste and destroy” — Henre De Lubac.

Building habits is about taking small steps in one direction until your habit becomes your routine. Choosing the right habit and working hard to make it your routine is what is important.

Here are some micro habits to help you enhance healthy living and a calm mind:

Micro habits for healthy living

  • The first thing to do before starting your day in the morning is to have a glass of water. Try placing a glass of water at your corner table so that you can drink it first in the morning, right when you wake up. As the day passes we often get busy in our day-to-day life that we hardly focus on our amount of water intake and often end up having tea, coffee, and other beverages but not water. Flushing out the toxins out of your body is important and it should be the first thing to start your day.
  • Walk as much as you can and come out of your comfort zone. Try to avoid using vehicles for nearby shopping and adapt to walking wherever you can. Avoid using the lift and avoid parking your car at your doorstep so that you don’t need to spare time out of your busy routine to walk.
  • Add the fiber to your diet by switching to fresh fruits, juices, and salads. Adding a plate of fresh green salad with some fresh berries and seasonal fruits and vegetables such as mangoes, strawberries, spinach, carrot, and cucumber will not only help you get some nutrients and fiber but will also help those looking for a diet to maintain healthy body weight.
  • Don’t fix yourself on your chair that means after every 30–40 minutes try getting up from your place to do some simple stretches. This is more important for the working professionals as they have a sitting job and hardly get time to leave their work zones. Thus, set up an alarm after every 30–40 minutes and try taking a walk even if it is to a washroom. Stretch your arms and legs whenever and wherever possible to keep your body flexible.

Apart from keeping physically fit it is equally important to stay mindful. A healthy body keeps you stay active and energetic to make your daily commitments, however, a calm mind helps you come out of even the toughest situations in your life.

Tiny habits for better mental health

  • Thanking your loved ones including yourself should be on your to-do list before going to bed. A thank you note is a simple technique to build strong and healthy relationships both in personal and professional life. Appreciate the love and compassion and being thankful for what you have or what the other person has done for you keeps you content, happy, and free from depression.
  • Take a pause before responding to people in any situation. Be a good listener and try to understand what the other person is willing to tell you. Take out every single word with caution and think before replying to any argument this will help you avoid blowing up in a stressful situation.
  • Learn to forgive yourself. Life is uncertain and at times things get out of control. At times you will become impatient but that’s okay. Try practicing mindfulness by chanting a mantra or counting sheep do whatever suits you to keep you calm especially during a heated argument. You can also go for a walk or can switch to reading an inspirational book do whatever interests you and adapt what works the best for you.

Neither it is easy to take up new habits in routine nor it is easy to leave habits you have been keeping for long. But for a healthy body and a peaceful mind, you need to work towards the habits that might seem to be micro but have a major impact on your lives.
